They are heavily advertising Oyster cards as the way to go. The price increases over the last couple of years have highlighted that cash prices are significantly higher than oyster prices, and these have been heavily pubclised over the media. TfL also publish fares at tube stations, in leaflet form and over the website. Given all this advertising, there is absolutely no reason why you should not have considered Oyster. The fact that you paying £4 for a single journey is really your fault for not considering the cheaper options.
Get an Oyster card. When you do, remember to touch in and out else you will get charged the full cash fare (and it will not count towards the daily price cap).

No one has to pay those fares, though. They're to deter people from using cash (more labour-intensive) Get an Oyster Card.
With an Oyster Card fares are much cheaper (about £6 for a day's travel anywhere on the LT system after 9.30am (9am on buses) and single bus fares are £1.
Even so, London Transport's fares are too expensive and compare terribly with other cities across Europe.

I'm afraid to say it IS cheaper to get an Oyster, though I don't like the fact that people are being forced to do so. Yeah it's easy saying it's quick and easy to get one, but what if you're caught short, weren't expecting to need a bus and you've left your Oyster at home, for example?
And weren't we told the fare increase was to improve services? Round where I am (east london) the buses STILL run late, overcrowded and all the rest. And then there's congestion charging and all that...how are Londoner's meant to get around, it's already expensive living in London without adding to it!
PS: I ain't a driver or whatever, but just a concerned (and p*ssed off) teen who uses the bus everyday...and it sucks...

In answer to Arcadia above: There is no such thing as London Transport any longer. There is 'Transport for London', responsible for roads, undergound railways, buses, taxis etc. Buses are privatised and services are contracted out by TfL. The tube is part privatised. TfL is directly controlled by the Mayor. The mayor is responsible for setting the fare scales.
And yes, cash fares are very high - but only mugs pay them. Get yourself an oyster card ASAP.

And what exactly does the mayor have to do with LT raising its fares? He doesn't run it, and doesnt control how much they charge. You may as well blame him for the rain.
And you cant use LT much anyway, or you'd already know that Oyster fares are much cheaper.

Travelcards are cheaper. Even if you buy an annual travelcard, it has to be cheaper than buying single tickets.
