And when people say within the family, does that mean they marry their cousins, or what? Is this a stereoype or does it really happen?

I live in Georgia, and I have lived in the south for years (not my whole life but most of it), and it is true about some. People marry cousins and such. (First cousins, as well as second and third and so on.) I've heard of a few instances where brothers and sisters married. So in those cases, it is literally within the family. BUT not all people here are like that!

For all of you that say it doesn't happen, I am telling you, you are wrong! It doesn't happen everywhere, but it does happen. A lot of people I went to school with in Alabama, and where I live now in Georgia are married to cousins. (I'm not making a joke, I'm serious.)

I lived in Tennessee for five years and I was spooked by the inbred Hillbillies. They don't look or act as we do. I'm NOT making fun of these people but they all looked alike and their mouths hung open. When you looked into their eyes there was nothing there. When I said hello to any of them there was no reaction-just stared at me blankly. It's such a shame. It happens everywhere not just there.

No they don't. Decades ago, in the mountains of Appalacia, this may have happened some, due to the fact that their just weren't that many eligible mates available. But basically, it is a stereotype of backwoods culture. There was more inbreeding in the ruling houses of Europe, than there ever was in the hills. Some of those royals actually married their brothers, sisters, daughters, nephews, nieces, etc. There was even a group, who had the job of trying to decipher just how great the chance was of having retarded or deformed children if two royals married, due to the fact that they were so inbred.

In Ancient Egyptian times there was inbreeding among the Royal families. Were they the original hillbillies? =)

well, i live in Hill Billy hell and no, we aren't married to our relatives... nobody i know is

but... there is some weird things that come up

like before you buy the marriage license that you buy at the court house here (i live in Kentucky) you have to swear that you aren't first, second or third cousins with your partner. there are laws in action here that don't allow 'inter-family marriage'

and there is always rumors about incest

but i have never known any personally

I doubt that this is very common anymore. I think it did happen sometimes in the past, usually in very remote, rural areas where an extended family or clan were the only people around. These people didn't have many partners to choose from and well...yuck!

I lived in Eastern KY in the Appalachians, thought of as the most hillbilly of all places, for a while, and this was a common joke, but it rarely happened. "Hillbillies" are as disgusted by the idea of marrying family members as the average American.

Let me go ask my brother in law. They are from Arkansas and if I'm not mistaken, I think his parents were brother and sister.....

Probably. Second or third cousins, that type of thing.
