You say you're an advanced reader, and go to a Christian school, so those narrow the field a bit. Here are a couple recommendations: --Frankenstein (Mary Shelley): If you haven't read it, trust me: it's more like a drama than a horror story--the movies don't do it justice. The real Frankenstein story (which, by the way, is the name of the scientist who makes the monster--the monster has no name) is a story of man's reach exceeding his grasp, and the search for love/belonging in a life for which one did not ask. The monster wants to be loved and wanted, but isn't. --Sophie's World (Jostein Gaarder): A crash course in the history of philosophy as told through this story of a girl who gets a surprise (for her birthday)--her very own philosophy teacher. It's a great read, and you learn a lot about Western philosophy. --The Little Prince (Antoine de St. Exupéry): A classic, really makes you think, very short and easy to read. It's seems simple, but it's really rich and a great book for an 8th grade book report at a Christian school.

My little sister is in 8th grade and reads a lot and I know she loved Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. I'm a junior in college and I started reading it and couldn't put it down either.
As far as funny books, my lil' sis was also obsessed with The Princess Diaries series (author Meg Cabot). I know these books may or may not be below eight grade reading level, but fun/addictive books are a good way to get a good reading habit.
What are some books these children have previously enjoyed?

you can go to www.bookadventure.com they offer a list of books for every grade level.
this is a fun site too because you can look up books and take quizzes on them and earn points for prizes. My daughter just got a free 6 month subscription to Highlights magazine with the points she earned. There are all different kinds of prizes and the books listed are from all different genres.
I wish I could help you with a funny book, my 8th grader does not really care for funny books - I think that you should be able to fins a nice variety at Book Adventure though!

I don't really know about funny, but when I was in grade 8 I really liked reading diaries. Not my friends, I mean real published diaries. You can get them about anything pretty much, I really liked the ones about pregnancy and boyfriends and just life in general. Actually, I still like diaries!
Crazy Days Quiet Nights or something similar to that was good.
Sweet Vally High books are good too.
I'm not really sure....
