The caskets are designed to have the head at the left and the feet at the right. There are hinges on the back of the casket and it closes in the fashion wherein the head is to the left, although they can be reversed if needed, such as trauma to the right side of the face. The foot end of the casket has the locking mechanism and usually some sort of metal tag identifying the manufacturer and style of the casket, so that the feet are always at this end to ensure that the head is in the correct position for burial.

Their heads are actually on the right side. The casket makers always put the lid on backards.

I always thought you just laid the person in the casket, so they would look comfortable, not to a side.
