Forget about INTRO in the formal sense. The worst are the ones that start with all facts and figures. It has to be "gripping".
Now, it usually depends on the subject matter. If you wrote down what is was somewhere, sorry I didn't see it. But one way that usually works is a quote. If you're writing about, I don't know, The Civil War, you can open the essay with a quote from one of the generals or a soldier.
"Onward Men! Do not surrender the field" And then explain what was just said, by whom, when, where etc. It works.

Okay this is creative writting, one of the most fun way to start an essay, curiosity & mystery has always baffled humans into giving more attention to a written work, you actually giving your words a voice, winks * try it.

Ask a question.
Start with a short, dramatic summary of something:
"Two countries are at war. One is planning an attack. A brave American went out riding that night, to spread the word and save the nation. His name was Paul Revere..."
I hope I helped you out!

Start it from the end of your story or essay, and then you relate what's happened.

You should ask a question or something surprising to get everyone's attention if you have to present it.

An attention grabber:
""Twas a dark and stormy night........"
or
"How could he escape?"
or
"The vortex was closing in on Jennifer".
or
"It's not possible but it happened".......
