“Le Suicide” by Durkheim is an example of positivism as he used only Quantitative data or secondary statistics from Europe. He was then able to establish a hypothesis on the possible causes of suicide, (integration or moral regulation). Durkheim’s study was also objective which positivism supports in that respect and he found Causal relations in production of rates. Although Durkheim’s work was in the form of comparative methods some sociologists argue that his work was more realist than positivist.
Durkheim chose to study suicide as the statistics were readily available to him, he attained these statistics from 11 different european countries. he regarded these as 'social facts' and therefore he believed that the statistics would help him find sociological causes for suicide rates.
Durkheim established four types of suicide:
Egoistic- insufficient integration into society
Anomic- insufficient regulation
Altruistic- too much integration
Fatalistic- too much restriction
Durkheim used scientific or 'quantitative' methods and employed the comparative method in a systematic way. however, he did not follow the 'postivists code' the total number of suicides were collected by unobservable 'collective tendancies'
according to modern sociologists Durkheim adopted the realist rather than positivist approach.
hope this helps

Are you expecting an essay here? Seriously, I just finished my exams, I don't wanna start essays on yahoo answers.
To make this a mini essay;
Durkheim wrote about Suicide.
There is some evidence to suggest that Durkheim had some interesting ideas.
However, there are some cases in which he presented some ideas that can be argued against.
Hence to conclude, Durkheim wrote about Suicide & in some cases his ideas are applicable. Howvever, in other cases they are not.

If you are a married Catholic you are less likely to commit suicide. That's the short version as opposed to the "write a 5000 word essay" version. Because of the age of his study there are more issues and influences these days 110 years on than he explored or possibly could. Also it's not obvious what the scope of his data was, sample size seems unclear and could seriously compromise any conclusions he made if analysed using modern statistical methods. Now, ManU or Portsmouth in the 4th round?

Was it something to do with men having a higher suicide rate than women? Maybe that's what he found actually. Because of social aspects, i.e. men have no outlet for their problems like women do, for example, talking to friends. So they're more likely to commit suicide. Sorry if i'm no help!

Seriously? Your questions would take a little more than a quick answer on a Yahoo Answers. I would suggest reading Suicide.
