I know about being a student and looking for cheap airfare. It's outrageous. Amazingly, cheapest flights are to london or madrid. Also cheaper if you don't fly weekends. Look at flying on Mon-Thurs. Check a lot of different websites. sidestep.com, cheaptickets.com, cheapfares.com, airfare.com, cheapair.com, just yahoo search for "discount airfare" and start looking. I've never had luck with travelocity or expedia.

But as far as standby goes--its a big DON'T. Depending on where you are trying to go (and from what city), there is usually only 1 flight a day to that city. (London usually has 2 flights a day). Everyone knows the airlines overbook their flights to make up for the no-shows. As its mostly business travelers Mon-Thurs to London, they aren't likely to No-show. So on a normal flight they are 100% packed. If you fly standby, you will be standing there at the airport waiting to go and once everyone gets on the plane and they annouce its full you are bumped to the next flight. Thats all well in good if you were flying NYC to Chicago and the next flight is 20 minutes later, but to Europe the next flight will probably be TOMORROW. And if you flew INTO boston, chicago or NY to make this flight you are now stuck getting a hotel in very expensive towns. It might take you 3 days to get to Europe. Plus if it's for vacation you probably only only have a few days to begin with.

I don't know when you were planning on going but just keep looking. The price is completely based on demand and therefore from week to week over months it will change drastically. I know people who have gotten great deals with waiting to the last minute--but I also know some people who have been screwed by it.

Now this is NOT something I did so I can't say I recommend it. But I have heard suggestions about getting that cheap flight to Madrid and then flying a smaller European airline like Ryan Air or taking the train to the city you wish to go to. I heard Ryan Air flights are very cheap.

It takes a lot of time searching to find the best deals. Good luck. But once you get there it will be all worth it.
