My sister got a hamster a few days ago. We keep holding him everyday so he can get used to us. Well everytime I try to pick him up he flinches and runs down the tube. then i follow him and try to pick him up but then he gets scared again and runs up the tube. I just want to know how to have a better relationship with it and why it asks this way. Thanks!

It could be that you aren't holding him right. If he is fine with the way everyone else holds him look to see how they hold him and hold him the same way. It could also be that you come at him too fast. Don't just shove your hand in the cage really fast. Be nice and relaxed and he should feel more comfortable.

Some hamsters just dont like people. Maybe this hamster is only nice to your sister because he is overwhellmed. Give him time and dont chase his up and down the tube cuz that will just freak him out more. Try giving him treats. Just remember that it is your sisters hamster and beleive it or not it will grow to lover her so dont feel bad if it doesnt like you. Maybe you could get your own hamster.
Hope I could help

You need to be around it but not touching it for quit a while till it calms down. Could you put it near you when your doing something else like watching tv or reading? that way it will be around you and you won't be scaring it. It will eventually get used to you and see nothing bad is happening.
You could also give it something it likes to eat every day. Be patient

Maybe he doesn't like to be grabbed. Try laying your hand, palm up, on top of the bedding and allow the hamster to explore your hand. Do this every time before you try to pick him up. Let him come to you in his own time instead of just grabbing him and scaring him.

Good luck!!

i have a hamster too and its not easy to hold it in your hands. it usually runs away and its difficult to catch it. they get scared and its normal. have patience and try without holding it too tight or put too much pressure, if it doesnt want you to hold it then leave it alone and try again some other time

Maybe he just doesn't like you. My advice would be just leave him alone too much stress can cause wet tail, which can kill them.

Either you are unintentionally squeezing him when holding him or that it does not like your body smell.
