The man is known for such films as Lawrence of Arabia, A Lion in Winter, Stunt Man and The Ruling Class, but he's never won an oscar outright. Is his performance in Venus the one that will do it for him?

It's always a bit dicey to compare performances. O' Toole has given us so many memorable characterizations over the years that it almost seems cruel to single one out as "the best."

Having said that, however, I'll add that I was absolutely FLOORED by the quality of his performance in "Venus." I've been an actor for most of my adult life, and, for my money, THAT'S why people go into the profession...to be able to put together a performance like that someday. He's totally fearless in the role, never once pandering to the audience in an attempt to have the audience "like" the character. His portrayal of Maurice is an unflinching case study of a charming rogue who has -- let's face it -- been a bit of a bastard throughout his life, but who has still managed to touch a number of lives in a positive and uplifting way.

Is it the best performance I saw in any film this year? Far and away. Do I think he'll win a well-deserved Best Actor Oscar? I'm not so sure. Sentiment seems to be running very high for Forest Whitaker's performance in "The Last King of Scotland." I have the utmost respect for Mr. Whitaker's work, but...it's not even close.

Still...the academy has a long history of messing these things up. Remember that Adrien Brody won an Oscar in the same year that Daniel Day-Lewis' astonishing performance as "Bill the Butcher" in Scorsese's "Gangs of New York" was nominated. And, Dustin Hoffman's performance as Ratso Rizzo in "Midnight Cowboy" was overlooked in 1969...in favor of John Wayne! The point is, the "best" performance is not necessarily the one that takes home the statue.

He has so many outstanding performances but I think Lawrence of Arabia and A Lion in the winter were his best performances. Forrest Whitaker is the favorite for the Oscar. I hope Pete does win the scar for Best Actor. It would be a great recognition to his work an him as an actor.

He had many, many fine performances but I loved him best in LION IN WINTER. His Henry II was magnificent and to play with Katherine Hepburn, wow! Her Eleanor of Aquitaine was his match in every way.

Yes, he was great in LAWRENCE OF ARABIA but my second favorite performance was in MY FAVORITE YEAR where he played a washed up actor, Alan Swann.

My 3rd choice would be BECKET.

But, like I said, he had many, many fabulous performances. I do think he deserves to win an Oscar for VENUS. But you never know with the Oscars. The best performer doens't necessarily win...
