to connect the middle ear with the mouth cavity, to allow for pressure adjustment in the middle ear.
reason: the eardrums dont work properly if there is a difference in pressure between the outer ear (means the outside) and the middle ear, and can even be damaged if the difference gets too big.
therefore, if there is an imbalance of pressure, the usually airtightly compressed tubes do partially open with movements of the throat( e.g. swallowing ) to allow for the necessary adjustment.
