I know where middle c is located on a scale and all that jazz, as well as what it sounds like, but I don't know what octave it's in.

It all depends on the person's range. For example, whether the person is a Tenor, Baritone, or Bass.

For someone who has a bass range, Middle C may seem impossibly high for them, whereas for a Tenor, Middle C is well within their reach.

First of all most men do not sing in "middle C", because most men cannot go too much higher, thus you should be singing as you say closer to low.
But remember you do not have to sing in "C" at all. This is why we have the remainder of the scale.

numbner one, there's only one middle c. you can sing a c higher or lower, but only at one point is it a middle c.

really it depneds on your vocal range. i have trouble hitting a middle c because it's rather high. my roommate (who often makes fun of my low voice) has no problem whatsoever, though he does have a high feminine voice...
