ok you dont appear to be a heavy user, like a serious performance gamer or video editor so Id' imagine the laptop you will be gettting will reflect this fact and not be over powerful. Probobly a mid-range machine. if this is the case you shouldnt suffer much slowdown BUT video editing does have a nasty habbit, (in my experiance) of really limiting system performance, even on the best of systems so look to get a more powerful processor with plenty of system RAM

.512 RAM minimum, 1gb+ is best. Stay away from slower processors like the Celron series in favor of a P4 or Athlon 64 2.6ghz minimum, Duel-core if you can afford it. Also stay away from Onboard graphics in favor of a seperate graphics card. All of that should aid your performance significantly.

As for the software side of things it is always best to get anti-virus and firewall software setup as soon as u get the machine, Stay away from companies like Symantec (or norton antivirus) and MacAffe security as in my experiance these are not only terrible programs but also slow down systems and cause havoc with the programs you wish to use by blocking things it shouldnt and generally being irritating. Far better software is F-prot antivirus which is a no frills program that doesnt slow down ur system with rubbish but still competently blocks pretty much anything nasty trying to get onto your computer. Zone alarm is a pretty decent Firewally that you can also use, which is secure and runs well.

Anti-spyware/addware software is a must too, Addaware and Spybot are two programs that i have used for years, and with regular updates and scans of your system they will really help performance in the long-run by removing crap, and immunising your system against things like hijackers, keyloggers, spyware and dammed popups.

Also be sure to cleanup and Defragment your Laptop once a month or so (borh programs can be found in Start-Programs-Accessories) doing this makes your computer run faster by deleting obsalete programs and directories, then moving and cataloging files to reduse search times on ur HDD respectivly.

For your internet access. only use Internet Explorer to go to www.firefox.com to download Mozilla's wonderful brower Firefox that is much faster, more accessable and safer than IE, you will really notice a difference when you use it!.

Oh and remember to keep your Graphics drivers continually updated, the age of your drivers could really choke off your system performance!

Make sure also to not keep many vieos and MP3s on your Laptop, as laptops rarely have a harddrive over 80gb this space soon fills up and kills your system speed! instead burn them to dvds, This save space and create safe backups incase ur HDD dies.

other useful programs are --Adobe Accrobat Reader for PDF files, Bearshare Pro (NOT the free version) to have access to a HUGE ammount of music/video and picture files. Divx and Xvid codacs to be able to view more types of video (Divx is great for encoding your own videos too, it reduces the size of videos AND still keeps quite good quality) Power Dvd is great for viewing any dvds you have on disk currently.

Well thats it, hope it helped. Good luck with your Laptop!

I've seen TMPGEnc Xpress used for video editing. It is pretty good, with easy to use features once you get used to it. It is somewhat picky on what video's it opens though.

Blaze Media Pro is another that has lots of features.

If its "sooooooo easy" why don't you know it?............................ Yeah thats what I thought! Anyways You should just get the top of the line laptop so you don't have to worry (p.s. iTunes only slows your computer when its open!)
