My class is planning to make a softball tournament for fundraising. I need ideas to make the event an enjoyable one for everyone, from the spectators, to the players. Also, I need ideas for gifts to give to all the people that have helped such as the referees and the people in the food and beverage stands. Any ideas welcome!

This is a big undertaking and it is great that you are trying it. I have questions for you before I have answers. How many fields do you have available? Will you use the entry fees to have the money to buy concessions and give these gifts? Do you have volunteer umpires or are you going to contract certified umps (be ready for a hefty fee per person if you do). Do you have all the equipment for the games that you will need? Who will line the fields? Who supplies the bases?
In putting a tournament together, you should have a quantity of teams that is a multiple of four or eight. Otherwise, you have to assign a bye (an automatic win against an opponent who does not exist) to one or more teams. I assume that the teams are viewed as more or less equal in skill, so that how you seed the teams is not important. If that is, the traditional seeding is 1st place plays 8th, 2nd plays 7th, 3rd plays 6th and 4th plays 5th. Then the 1-8 winner plays the 4-5 winner and so on.
Having more than one field ensures that you won't have people standing around too much. If the day is long, it can get boring for some.
If you want to get creative in the scoring department, you can add some scoring element that gives credit for runs scored in more than just determining the winner.

Ok. First of all that tournament is a great way to raise money. Our school had a softball tournament and a baseball tournament. But, I suggest that you charge 5-7 dollars for the players to play. But, if you don't want to go with charging the players you should charge a little more for the viewers. They should pay 5-7 dollars too.

Concesions are a biggee~~~

HOT DOGS< HAMBURGERS< FRENCH FRIES> SODA> BOTTLED WATER> CANDY> CHILIE> AND ALL SORTS OF OTHER THINGS.

People love the snackage!!!

As for gifts...
the refs would like a:

cool whistle, a t-shirt, a new plate brush...even if they arent umping

the ump... the new plate brush

the beverage and food stand helpers...
give them two free items. I worked in a concession stand that was great!
GOOD LUCK

We made our most profit in concessions. And got them donated free by local grocers. Also, charge $1-$2 admission at the door.
