A diaper cake loaded up with all the essentials your budget will allow.
For example: A diaper cake made with a full package of diapers. Included would be Gas Drops, Pacifiers, Baby Bath, Baby Powder, Baby Lotion, Diaper Cream, A Great Blanket, Colorful Links, A Personalized Onesie, A Brag Book (Photo Album), Diaper-bag sized items, and a fun item (like a animal-themed bath mitt) for the topper!!
Diaper cakes are great....a really fun gift to give and receive!!
I make them....by the way! I do quick work and can customize it to match the shower theme or baby's nursery decor!
I put the link to my website below....check it out, if you like!

Why not buy a small hamper (pink or blue) & fill it with diapers, powder, shampoo, diaper wipes,Q-tips & bath toys. You could pick a lot of little things that she'll need..I find by going to store & walking do baby section is where you'll get your ideas..Its little things that a mother needs but never thinks of at the time.Good Luck

my favorite gift for a baby shower is a baby bath tub & fill it up like a gift basket with bath towels, baby bath & shampoo, and some pajamas.... and a package of newborn diapers
another cute gift idea is a diapers bag.... get several cute onesies and t-shirts, and a long string and some clothes pins.... pin the baby shirts to the string like its a clothes line and put it down in the diaper bag... leave one end of the string hanging out of diaper bag and attatch a 'pull me' sign to the string.... it is always cute watching the new mommy pull the clothes line out of the diaper bag.
**i also like to make a little gift bag for mommy... a BIG bottle of motrin or advil is good, some bath oil, or if its at a time when i can afford it a day pass for the spa, just something for relaxation, its always great**

Every time one of my people had a baby, I went out to the toy store and got them the softest, cutest toy bear I can find. I can't tell you how many bears are named after me or how many kids call me their uncle.
There's two options to go with here. Either get something for the kid, or something for the parents. And I don't mean a bottle of JD. Although they will need it. Something to make living with a little human a little easier. High chair that converts into a car seat, a mobile crib to take from room to room or on the road, baby monitors, membership to parenting clubs, parenting books. All of those are good ideas to start with.

Avoid clothes, she will get enough clothes from everyone else, get stuff that people wont think of blankets, bathing stuff for baby, if she is breast feeding, nursing pads, if bottle feeding bottle and a bottle cooler or bottle steraliser, cloth or disposable nappies, a changing mat for baby, and pamper products for the mummy to be is always greatly appreciated.

what I used to do is get something for the new momma. A gift or gift card that will allow the new momma to feel really special after almost a year of being p.g. A gift card is always a great idea.

Find out if she has registered anywhere. If she has you can go to that store and get a printout of what she needs or wants. Otherwise if you want to be practical get things like diapers, wipes, burp rags, etc.
