go to start/program/accessories/system tools and click on disk clean up...you may have to de-fragment your dick also...my computer/drive c right click/properties. 256 mb ram is low for 160 gb hard disk....remove unwanted programs if you don't require...run anti virus (Complete). This may solve your problem...if you have done all this and have problem...contact me. If you open more windows at a time it may also freeze. Check whether you are getting a warning saying 'your virtual memory is low'.

Most common problems are from the conflicts which may cause between your hardware devices such as your installed cards (Sound, VGA, Modem, LAN…), try updating your drivers or totally changing your cards. Your RAM chips might not match, especially if their buses aren’t the same. More RAM chips defiantly help the possessing to be smoother but mind to add the same chips to prevent conflict. Your HDD might also have a bad sector or sector virus on it. If your CPU is Celeron or has a little Cache, it is not wise to run so many programs together in one time. It might also be because of installing and uninstalling many programs for a long period of time. In this case a new windows installation can help. Try to keep your new windows clean as possible. Testing softwares on your pc will slow you down after a while.

Go to tools,Internet options,delete cookies,delete files and folders remember to check off line contents.Also days to keep history set this to zero.Now then get yourself some good cleaners avg anti spyware,spyware guard,search and destroy,spyware blaster these are a few of my favorites.also go to accessories, system tools,do a disk clean up,then a defrag.registry is very good to clean out also a good and safe program is regcleaner but only use the clean registry option.Hope this helps.

try stopping programs at start up, sounds like too many programs running in background,
start
run - type msconfig
go to start up tab
now only un-check boxes for programs you have installed or do not want to start durng boot up be careful here!
