After quickly writing just one essay, my hand is already starting to hurt. Normally after the exam, my hand will still feel a bit limp but after a while it's okay already.

Yes, that rings a bell. I used to stop for a little while and just rub my fingers and rotate my wrist to give it some exercise. Once the exam was over, it would go away on its own. Doing the same awkward thing for a period of time just affects our joints. I suppose you could try a wrist support, but they are difficult to write with.

Simply said, you are using muscles for a longer period of time that you don't normally use. Unless you write long hand all the time, and your muscles in your hand are used to the continue exercise, you will have a sore hand, fingers, muscles. The same is said for someone going out to garden for hours at the beginning of the season; their hands are sore and ache.

Sometimes. I find it help to use a pen with a wider grip, and possibly a gel tip rather than a ball point.
