The most common way to become a pilot is to start out as a pilot in the armed forces, like the navy or the air force. This will get you huge numbers of flight hours and qualify you to be a commercial pilot in a more direct way than anything else.
If the army isn't for you, you can go another route. The salary for this route is pretty bad for a long time, but it may be worth it to you if the military isn't the way you want to go. I have a friend going this route right now. He took flying lessons, got his pilot's license, and then became a flight instructor. After doing this for several years, he has enough hours to apply to a regional airline that runs the local, small routes for the big carriers. He said that this pays terribly ($20-25K a year), but after about a year to a year and a half of this, you can become the assistant pilot on the major routes, which pays about twice that. Then you work your way up to being the captain, which pays six figures. It seems like a long road, but if you don't want to join the military, this is your other option.
The other thing to be aware of is do you have any physical limitations that would prevent you from becoming a pilot? The main one that I know of is eyesight. You need near perfect eyesight to be a pilot in the military. They used to not accept LASIK-corrected vision, but might now. There are other limitations, like diseases, etc.

Go to a flight school. Then the job you get will depend on what kind of flying you want to do. Commercial, or private pilot. Run a charter of your own. Your salary will depend on you pretty much.

You start out taking flight lessons to see if this is the occupation that you really want to go into. You have to have so many hours of flight time to move up to various stages of your flying ability. If you work, this is the only way to begin, other wise, if you can afford the tuition, attend flight school full time.

You will need to get top grades at school/college/University AND have an excellent health record.
The amount of pay you can get is extremely high, but it will be hard work to get that far.
