I like all types of books, so I'll recommend one in each genre that I like. =)

General Fiction:
A Prayer for Owen Meany - 10/10 - It's a really good book. It's funny and moving, and you won't regret reading it. (For more of my opinions about this book, look at some of my other answers to questions in this section on Answers.)

Science Fiction:
A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - 7/10 - It's a very good book, and it is very funny, but it ends very quickly.

Fantasy:
The Harry Potter Series - 10/10 - This is my favorite series. It's got a little of everything in it, and it really draws you in.
The Inheritance Trilogy (Eragon, Eldest...) - 9/10 - Also very good. =)
The Bartimaeus Trilogy - 10/10 - It takes place in an alternate reality of modern-day London, where corrupt magicians are in charge of government. It's told from the point of view of three major characters: Bartimaeus, the djinni; Nathaniel, the magician; and Kitty, the common rebel.
Wicked - 9/10 - This is one of my favorite books as well. It can be a bit boring during some parts, but it is still very, very good.
The Chronicles of Narnia - 9/10 - Each of the seven books is very exciting!

Mystery:
The Sherlock Holmes mysteries - 9/10 - These are must-reads if you like mysteries. They're all exciting and no mystery is like another. I really enjoy reading these. My favorite one is "A Scandal in Bohemia".
And Then There Were None - 7/10 - A thrilling book. The first chapter is sort of boring, but it gets much better afterwards.

Other/Genre Not Known:
Angels & Demons - 10/10 - Also one of my favorite books. It's exciting from cover to cover, and though it's complicated, you're so into the book that you understand everything. There's this feeling I get when I finish a good book... And I had that feeling not only when I finished this book, but from the beginning to the end.
The DaVinci Code - 9/10 - This is a great book, also by Dan Brown, but not as good as Angels & Demons.
A Series of Unfortunate Events - 10/10 - Yes, they're children's books, but you can really get into these. The main plot is easy enough for a child to understand, but if you read into it and try to decipher the back plot, it gets verrrry good.
The Giver - 10/10 - It's an easy read, but it's still very good. It's about a futuristic community where everybody is equal and everything seems perfect... But it's really not.

Other Books That I Like:
Silent to the Bone - 9/10
The Outcasts of 19 Schuyler Place - 8/10
The Supernaturalist - 10/10
The Artemis Fowl Series - 9/10
Lord of the Rings - 9/10
Confessions of a Closet Catholic - 6/10 (I would like this book so much more if the main character wasn't a cry baby!)
Bridge to Terabithia - 9/10
Number the Stars - 10/10

The best one is the one you have yet to read

Ii have just finished several of the novels of Oscar Hijuelos - won the Pulitzer Prize for one (Mambo Kings) although Mr Ives Christmas was my favorite.

I also loved the Golems of Gothem by Thane Rosenbaum.

Find an author you like and read your way through his works. Look him or her up on the internet and chances are that person will talk about authors they like. Follow that traiil - let the writers you like recommend other writers.

"The Lord of the Rings" by J.R.R. Tolkien is a masterpiece of the use of the English language.

"The Old Man and Sea" by Ernest Hemmingway, written in a completely different style, is also an excellent example of the use of English.
