I know Garth Brooks and Shania Twain were popular in the '90s. I want to know when the country music's rise in popularity began and who started it.

Depends on when you are talking about...There are legends like Johnny Cash and Loretta Lynn who have been popular for decades...also, Kenny Rogers...and today, yes Garth Brooks and Shania Twain have most to do with it...

Country music has always been popular, The people who do not like country wouldn't know it till they come across a song that seems to make sense to them. Then all of a sudden they start wondering "when did country music gain popularity?" The fact is country music has had some of the best musicians in the world. George Jones, Tammy Wynette, Porter Wagoner,Little Jimmy Dickens, Merle Haggard, Waylon & Willie< Garth Brooks,George Strait etc etc...Country music will always be popular for the simple reason their are so many new acts that come in every year. I think for those that don't like country, or say that country put's them to sleep... They should take some time and actually listen to a song instead of hearing it...They will find country music is as good if not better than most other.

I think it started off with the Urban Cowboy craze in the early 1980's. The theme of my high school graduating class (1982) was "I was country when country wasn't cool." That had been a song the year before by Barbara Mandrell. It made me mad that they claimed that, because I was. They weren't. They were "country" only because it was cool at the time. I was the one who used to get made fun of for liking country, and now all of a sudden it's in, and the popular crowd is acting as if they liked it all along. Puh-leeze.
