Hello!
You have asked a very nice question. Contemporary polity surely would vote the USA as the most powerful nation in the world. Although today, military might is not the only parameter to qualify as a strength, at least not enough to become the most powerful nation in the world. Foreseebly, China & India are emerging powers; not only militarily, but also economically. Economic empowerment is transcending boundries thanks to globalization. With economic empowerment comes power of a different kind. The power to chose. Assuming that China & India both have an aggregate population of over 2 Billion, thats a lot of poeple chosing a common goal. It is for this main reason that 90% of the USA's foreign policies are directed towards Asia, specifically towards the countries mentioned above.
Hence I would like to conclude by stating that the USA is the most powerful nation today; & China and India are the successors of the throne.
Thank you.

Don't know about the G8, at the moment it seems to be Iran, North Korea and Israel. Off the top of my head it would seem to be USA Japan Russia UK China France Germany Italy (I think I've got all the countries right in G8). Ah - Canada, not China, delete China and put Canada in after France. Unless Canada go to war with the US as in South Park, the Movie, in which case we'll all find out exactly what they're all aboot!

China is the most powerful. Has the most people to loose for stupid wars and would recover faster. Thanks to our brilliant government. They have either equal or more advance weapons than we have now.
In World War II this country had the manufacturing capacity to turn out war products. If we need to be resupply, China would have the capacity to do this. Detroit, Cleveland and other cities have been bombed already with the exit of millions of jobs. Who has the majority of these jobs, China of course. None of these jobs were obsolete like when we went from the horse buggy to the automobile. Stolen, because of greed, not intelligence.
US has a temporary lead, because of the stock piling or warehouse of military weapons. They could only survive with the Navy, but for how long.
Bush has made us weaker by having what allies we did have by being arrogant, lying and making stupid decisions about Iraq. This will take years to correct. Has given away our wealth and made the middle class to be much poorer, Bush and and Cheney are worst than any terrorist. As the Soviet Union said we will destroy our self from within. Never mind leaving Iraq and saying we can't finish anything Bush started. United States is the most powerful with its inventory, but is vastly losing its resources in Iraq. Don't believe Dictator Cheney, he is the Godfather in this mess. Remember he told Bush's father what to do also.

You have to consider the following parameters:
1. Military
2. Political
3. Economic
4. Moral
The US, for instance, would score highly on 1 and (to a lessening amount) 3, but would fare badly on 2 and 4.

The USA is considered the most powerful member of the group, although is not formally tagged as such.
Here is an informative article about the group:

Besides the USA? I didn't know there were any other powerful countries. Pound for pound, I suppose Israel is pretty tough. Britain ain't no slouch, but nothing comes anywhere close to the US for power.
