im sure it happens often. i developed very early and got my first period well before my mother could have ever talked to me about it..i was nine. i freaked out and thought something was wrong with me, and had to have my mother explain it on the spot. depending on when the girl gets her "talk" in correlation to when she actually starts, im sure this can happen more often than not.

Lets just say that my mom did not EVER talk to me about what it was to be a women - I found out via friends etc so when I did get my first period in the early teens I did not Panic too much - however mom did not have enough sanitary towels - so that was embarrassing. Also the next thing I knew I was no longer allowed to play with all of my Friends especially if they were boys-! I have two daughters and i have made sure they are informed about their change and that soon they will be young women - I also have ensured that they have a pack of sanitary products stashed in their rooms - so it is not so embarrassing!

I dont know anyone who this happened to (as a child that is) I do know lots of ladies with learning dissabilities who get their period and dont understand it no matter how many times staff explain it to them. They can do very innapropriate things around the issue, rather than keeping it private. I imagine it would be very frightening for a girl, she would think she is bleeding to death. My mum warned me and i still was a little shocked. Another point, have you seen Carrie with sissy spaceck? That happens at the start of the film to Carrie. Its quite disturbing.

I had my first period when i was 10. Yes i was scared but when i talked to my mum she reassured me so that helped. She was surprised that I'd started so early.
Then i got the full sex education, too much info at that particular time! Had no implications at all for me.

it all depends on the parents views - let it occur then explain or forewarning. the whole idea of it to a younger adolescant could very well make them feel sheepish(!) and embarassed but it depends on the pre-existin confidence. A confident child will still flounce around but feel more grown up and a shy child could very possibly feel reclusive and ( yes sadly ) dirty .

It petrified the life out of me. My parents had all gone to church like they usually do and i was alone at home. I felt strange and noticed the blood and was horrified, luckily my elder sister came home and helped me out. My parents did not speak of such things and that is another reason i am angry at the bible saying that for seven days a month woman are dirty and should not work with food. HUH.

I was well aware of what my period was, but I remember feeling very grown up and happy that it had arrived! That was until I suffered the full symptoms i.e pain PMT etc!
