hi again, for the price, vinyl siding is the least expensive way to improve the outside of your home. cement board, wood, and aluminum all cost more. installation costs are higher on those also. vinyl siding doesn't get any dirtier than the others, and sunlight affects them all. lighter colors may show dirt more than darker colors, but light colors will be less affected by the sun. all of the other choices will likely require paint, so they aren't really maintenance free. when you decide on the style of siding that you want, get the thickest version made. siding is made from .040" thick up to .048" and although the difference is only that of two plastic garbage bags, thicker is better. i would recommend that you go no less than .044" as the savings from thinner isn't that great. i personally like mastic siding, the design of it was so good that alcoa bought them, or alcoa siding. also, doing a siding job to your house allows you to increase the insulating value of the walls of the house, and trimming and caulking the windows will cut down on drafts too. i had wanted to mention this in the other answer, but got side tracked and forgot. well, i think that's all now, so once again, good luck and enjoy your new siding.

As a contractor, I am very familiar with the product and its pros and cons. On the pro side, it is a viable option for upgrading and remodeling older homes that have uneven walls and where the project is on a tight budget. It is relatively easy to install and looks good for many years if it is properly washed and maintained. Some people request it on new homes, but I try to discourage it because of the cons. The cons outweigh the pros in my opinion. The product is now flame retardant and melts easily if someone burns a leaf pile in close proximity to the siding. I've seen many homes damages from this common occurrence. It also makes an insect haven, especially for wasps. I've torn off my fair share of vinyl siding and the wasps and spider nests was extensive. Bugs especially like to hibernate in the crevices the siding creates. Over time the vinyl gets old and brittle and fades in the sun. It can be painted but just never looks the same. Plus it requires frequent washings to keep off the mold and dirt. There are just too many better products on the market, especially considering the life expectancy of vinyl.

Twelve years ago my Condominium Association purchased very High Quality vinyl siding from Canada.
It is muth heavier than the USA siding - it is the kind that is used in the Arctic. Periodically, it needs to be pressure washed. It looks like new - it is a Godsend.
