The mayor of a small Texas town wants to make people pay — literally — for saying the N-word.

Ken Corley, mayor of Brazoria, Texas, is proposing a citywide ordinance that would make uttering the racial slur punishable by up to a $500 fine.

Use of certain words could provoke violence. Shouting Fire in an occupied building could cause people to stampede. As I have stated so many times before People of Color should stop calling themselves the N word or Dog etc...making it socially acceptable! They don't really know the true significance or history of the word and actually is a mis-pronunciation for the word Niger. Not all African Americans came from that region of Africa and shows the illteracy and undereducation of many...See the Movie: Hip Hop We Got Your Kidz...can be found at your local library or request it! Glad you asked that!

The local government would lose on anyone appealing this fine. The mayor is politically Grandstanding just like Jesse Jackson wanting reparations for slavery. Note that Jesse doesn't go after the originators the African cheifs who sold the prisoners of war for rum and rifles or even the middle men. He goes after the end users.

I agree with Rev. Dr. Melvin L. Johnson. You can't legislate people into not being stupid. It's excellent that both Black people and White people have come out against this. It shows that despite what the feeble minded choose to believe, some things don't have some insidious agenda or double standard. Whites and Blacks alike faced fines if they said it. Whites and Blacks alike have expressed their displeasure at attacking the problem simply on a superficial level. Good for this town.

(On a side note: I do love the town's restriction on allowing sexual predators to live in city limits, however.)

you have a freedom of speech. There are just consequences!! That goes with anything. You have the right to drive a car, but if you speed there a consequences, you can drink but not too much. You can say things without harassing or insulting someone.
I think by ruling out the n-word that is for your own safety!!lol!

No you do not have the right to free speech w/out gov interference. Speech that is banned:
slander
libel
treason
threat to kill president
threat to hijack plane
anythign that can incite bodily harm
etc...
Does this situation fit? Well a lot of rappers will be paying out the nose.

It's just a word, Any word can be easily replaced with another, In the long run,it becomes impossible to legislate the intent behind the slander...
