My laptop caught a virus (type unknown) My desktop has a spyware and virus protection program. If i hook the two together to try to retrieve data from the laptop will the desktop download the virus? and if so, will the Norton antivirus try to destroy it in both computers?

It depends what virus and where it is on the system. If it is a virus such a Trojan these are very "contagious" and will most likely find it's way into the new system.
If I where you I would eliminate the virus on the laptop and then transfer the files.
