lol wow, what a question. Ok, ill try and be as un-biased as possible, but i cannot speak for others. So what is the best species? well this is very debatable and you will need to answer some questions yourself first.

Upon loading WoW you need to decide before you start which class, the reason for this is not every race can be every class. With the exception of The Burning Crusade, Paladin and Shaman are Faction specific, in that in this game there are two Factions, the Alliance and The Horde and a Paladin can only be on the Alliance and vice versa, Shaman for Horde.

Each race also has 'Racial Traits' which can compliment the class (or profession) you choose. An example of this is the Dwarf has an automatic +5 to guns, so if they use a gun they will deal just a bit more damage than another race can of the same level (and same equipment). Dwarfs can only be a Preist, Hunter, Paladin, Warrior or Rogue so such a racial trait would only benefit a Hunter, Warrior and Rogue since these classes can use a gun.

Another example is the Orc which racially has blood fury which can increase dmg by 25% but reduce healing by 50%, +5 to axes, resistance to stun and knockdown effects and increase pet melee damage. The classes an Orc can be are Hunter, Rogue, Shaman, Warlock and Warrior.

Through alot of trials and errors players have an idea of the best race for which class and you can explore this yourself by reading the forums ill include in the Source below.

If you read the manual you'll get a good idea of the classes and races available and once you've decided which Faction you want to be part of, the class you wish to be and which professions you would ideally want to take, then the races you can be will be extremely limited.

Its your character so untimately it will need to be upto you to decide.

If you are a first time player then perhaps a class that has alot of diversity, such as a Warlock or Hunter will be best, since the warlock has great spells and a pet, which the hunter has good melee/bow and a pet.

Now finally i havent included the Burning Crusade, the just released expansion which includes Blood Elfs and Draenei. I'll leave these 2 races a mystery simply becase i havent got one to lvl70 yet :p
