ok, i have a large fancy fantail about the size of a basball in my large 40 gallon. ive noticed he acts like he has swim bladder problems only at night. he swims upside down, floats to the top of water, and just seems to have a hard time swimming period. but the weird thing is this only happends at night. this has been going on for about a week or so now. last night i thought for sure he was going to die he kept swimming on his side and his mate kept nudging him. but every morning hes fine and swims the correct way. and awaiting his breakfast. plez help fishy has problems!

happends a few minutes after turning light off. he just starts swimming weird until morning. the fish is only a few yrs old had him since baby.

Dear Gold Fish Keeper,
The oxygen content in the water is different during the day time and night time, only if you have plant in the tank.
During the day the fish gets motivated more and always looking for food, so he has to swim for it, this makes him balance well.
Actually, if your fish floats, this is due to the air bladder problem and could get permanent. When this happens he will just float and hard to find feed and die which will take a long time as gold fish can go with out food for months.
Suggest you clear out your tank and reduce any bugs that may have caused this problem. It could also comes from over feeding the fish at one time as gold fish do not know when to stop and over eat will make the digestion / oxidation terns to air in the air bladder. It is an unbalance situation for many gold fish.
1/2 tea spoon of table salt / liter of water helps this some time.
Do not feed the fish for 3 to 4 days and see what happens.
Don't forget to change the water after the treatment.

i guess its swimming bladder problems so what i did was replace the standard floating goldfish pellets with goldfish flakes and before feeding, i take some goldfish flakes and put them in a small cup/bowl and soak them and make them sink. Then just pour it into the tank to feed the goldfish. This stops the swimming bladder disease from advancing.
If your goldfish eats frozen peas, buy frozen peas from a supermarket from the freezer section and boil the peas and take off the skin. Feed it to the goldfish if it will eat it.
People said this will force air out of its guts and possibly the disease will be completely gone.
Then use my goldfish flake method to stop this from happening again.
PS: You have to feed the goldfish peas for about 2-3 weeks. It is best to convert from goldfish floating pellets to flakes permanently. Another solution is to soak the pellets in water and use a clean spoon to press the pellets that are still in water until all the air come out of the pellet and sinks although the it looks funny, this is no laughing matter.

When fish fall asleep they tend to swim unknowing of where there going. Some fish are prone to extreme sleep swimming due to natural in stints. If he's not acting like that in the morning that's probably it. Also the float bladder thing is just another sign of sleep swimming.

Need a little more information.
Do you know how old the fish is?
When the fish begins to swim strangely each night, does it come on very suddenly or does it slowly start acting wierd?
It is right after you feed them, right after turning on or off a light?
Look for any common thread the might trigger it each night and add that to your question please.
