Singapore is an island and a small one at that. Population has to grow & people have to live somewhere. Of course uncontrolled unbarnization is a negative but what choice do you really have anyway?. Singapore does not have a lot of natural resources that they have to control anyway.

This is progress in my opinion. If you long for a rural existence their government could offer subsidies to farmers and pass laws on building codes making the urban development stop. Only through political change would this occur.
