We were shopping for a wood stove about two years ago and researched Vermont Castings.

When Vermont Castings started, it was the preeminent woodstove - wonderfully built. However about 10 or 20 years ago or whenever the company was sold, it really went downhill, and workmanship got shoddy. We couldn't find anyone to say anything nice about the current stoves they make.

We ended up buying a Hearthstone soapstone woodstove - it was wonderful (I say "was" because we just sold the house). The soapstone heats up slowly, so you don't get this intense burn-your-skin-off-heat and dies down slowly so it keeps the place wonderfully warm over a long period of time without being really intense. Take a look at them if you can.

We have a DutchWest made by Vermont Castings. It's a plain, black matte, cast iron stove. I have owned my Vermont Castings for almost a decade with no rust and lots of fires. With the blower motor on, this stove can heat all of a ranch-style home in -20F weather. It was our only source of heat, cooking ability and water (through ice-melting) during the big ice storm several years ago. It's still going strong with no problems.

We have this model, with the same "traditional" looking cast iron finish. It looks as good as the day it was born, and it's about 10 years old. Gorgeous stove!

If you are planning to start on your woodworking project, this isn't something you should use, it's something that you would be insane not to. Go here https://tr.im/pDvtn
Truth is, I've been a carpenter for almost 36 years, and I haven't found anything like this for less than 10's of thousands of dollars.
