Microwave ovens heat water and some sugars and oils. They heat by the friction they cause in the water molecules. They also create electrical fields which can melt thin metals such as decorative gold trim on fancy dishes. Some other materials will resonate to the microwave energy and heat quickly, to the point of catching on fire.
Microwave ovens can be used to disinfect kitchen rags and sponges, but the need to be damp. Such items can be heated for 2 minutes to kill bacteria - if they are damp.
As for socks... well it would be a simple thing to dampen them and microwave them, but then you will have damp socks on after they cool down, right? They will definitely heat up, but it is a problem to determine how damp to make them and how long to heat them.
;-D Why not just iron them. You can get them very hot, and they will be dry when you are finished. While you are at it, iron that other stuff that you need to iron!
If you are in a hurry, why not try a hair dryer? Clean warm dry socks sound like a better idea than hot - steaming socks, that will be cold and damp in a few minutes anyway.

Synthetic fiber & a microwave?- I am goin' to say NO!!!
Do what I do take them for a spin in the dryer. I also make sure to wear a cami under my clothes (its a girl thing... just thought I'd mention it)in the winter and I warm that up in the dryer or by running an iron over it. Iron could work for socks too!!

A better way is to get slippers with gel inserts. The inserts can be heated in the microwave and keep your feel warm for ages. If I wanted to heat socks up quickly, I'd use the iron instead.

That is not a good idea because the microwave won´t warm up dry socks. Its working principle is based on water content of food and I think you don´t want to wear hot wet socks.

As long as they are CLEAN.
This is a true story. I have a pair of socks that have sand built into the bottoms. You actually put them into the microwave and heat them. They keep your feet warm for a long, long time.

Never thought of that, but I'll bet yes if you set a cup of water in there at the same time and stand close by. Check after just a few seconds.

Yep. I used to have to hand wash some clothes and one of the hardest items to hang dry were my bath towels. They were so thick that they would start to sour while I had them hanging up to dry. It would take days for them to dry. I started putting them in the micro wave (be careful because if it stays too long they can actually burn and I wouldn't be surprised if left unattended they could catch fire because they take up so much space) for about 15 minutes and then let them hang dry. They would still be damp, but they would hang dry fluffy just like I put them in the dryer.
