Dear Yahoo Friends,

I live in the country in an old wooden frame home. The home is in good shape and sound. Two years ago I saw a large black snake crossing my back yard while I was doing yard work. I took my rake and picked the joker up and slung him into the woods. A few months later I was upgrading the electrical wiring this pretty little home. Working in the attic I looked to my rear and in the corner of the attic where the eve meets the attic floor a large black snake was coiled up observing me. After doing battle for about 40 minutes with him, I did him in and got rid of it. Yesterday, looking for an item in the attic I noticed a large snake skin on top of the insullation. How do I prevent these critters from gettin in my house? HELP ME!

If the snake is coming into your house, there's a reason for it. Are you in the southeastern U.S.? If so, this sounds like an indigo. Big, thick, glossy black, irridescent in the sun? If this is what it is, rodents -might- not be your problem, because indigos love eating other snakes, especially diamondback rattlesnakes, so this could be a VERY good thing. As for keeping it out... it's difficult, just about as hard as keeping rodents out. Any hole bigger than a quarter should be plugged, and really, that's all. It could also be a thermoregulation thing. Seeing as it's a snake and all, it can't regulate it's own body temperature, and I'm sure it gets warmer in your attic than it does outside at night.

You may be able to find a nuisance wildlife removal company in your area, but I doubt they'll come out to look for it, it would probably have to be out in the open or contained in some form or another, and if it IS an indigo, they may not legally be able to do anything with it, because they do have various federal protections.

Good luck.

Get rid of the rats and mice.
I think that's what you've got a lot of and that is why the snakes come into your house.

Where do you live and what snakes are these? If they are not poisonous, you can simply invest in a proper tool (those long sticks with a clamp at the end) to catch them and get them out of your home when you do see them. It's all part of living in the country, you get animal visitors from time to time. I really don't see how you can keep them out of your house since they are such experts.

You could set up bait and traps around the house so you catch them before they enter your house but your yard will be a minefield for all the other critters. Not to mention the neighbourhood cats..

The shed was probably left by the ghost of the snake you slaghtered in the great attic battle of man vs. nature. Seriously That could be the shed of the one you killed. If your in the United states it sounds like a Black Rat snake and they are harmless. They are notrious climbers and feed on mice, rats, birds, bats and sometimes sqirrels. If any of these are in your attic then they arent helping. Seal up your house the best you can, 1/4 in wire mesh over vents etc. Moth balls I hear dont really work especially if you have snake food running around. Also could of been hibernating up there depending on the time of year. Bottom line remove their food source, keep junk cleaned up (outside), openings sealed/covered and the lawn mowed and they shouldnt come around as often, and if there passing thru your yard just let them go on their way. Seriously my sister and me found one this summer and she just picked it up. Learn what lives around you, what is dangerous, and what isnt. Seriously I would rather have a snake in or around my house than what it eats.

first of all is it on your attic (roof area) or move slowly area (less than floor) even if it is interior the roof area someway then get someone to get it out of there. even if it is less than the domicile dont trouble about it until eventually eventually you should get less than there for some unusual reason, it is better to have a snake that kills mice and incets than mice and incets comming into your position and eating your nutrition and fixtures. it received't come into your position because like maximum snakes it is per chance terrified of you more desirable than you're of it. in case you by threat do locate it at your residence, use a shovel to its head, that appears to be like the perfect component to grap in a pinch.

there is two sure ways. #1 seal all holes to prevent entry. #2 purchase a king snake and keep him in your attic.

Put moth balls around your foundation, and some in your attic. Snakes can't breath around them. Make sure you don't have any pets that may get into them. .
