My husband and I like the compressed wood paper wrapped ones you buy at your local grocery store or at Home Depot...
They burn cleaner than regular wood and don't spark or make a lot of smoke...
They burn about 3 hours each...

Red Elm-is the best because it creates its own oxygen and burns for a very long time.
Ash-(dry) is the most readily available and burns very hot.
Oak-it's not very good. It burns hot, but it's very hard to get it burning.
Soft Maple-burns best if you have to use wet wood.

Ash is supposed to be the King - or Queen - of woods for burning according to old lore talked about on TheTree web site.
I haven't got around to trying it but it's supposed to burn even when green!
