my computer power supply sudenly makes this very loud whirring noise. i suspect it is the cooling fan in the power supply. a sharp tap on the box cures it for awhile but it reapears. do i need to replace the whole power supply or can i just replace the fan inside ? where do i get such a fan. i live in london.

Power supplies aren't very expensive.
Go to your local computer shop and buy one.
Better that than a faulty pc.
Do not tap the tower case.
Not for any reason and especially when your computer is booted.

Try cleaning it, you will be surprised at the amount of dust on it, causing an out of balance fan blade
