The chayote (Sechium edule) is an edible plant, which belongs to the gourd family Cucurbitaceae along with melons, cucumbers and squash.
The plant has large leaves that form a canopy over the fruit. The vine is grown on the ground or more commonly on trellises.
Chayote (pronounced [tʃa'jɔte], roughly "chy-O-tay"), is the Spanish name of the plant, from Nahuatl hitzayotli. It is used in many parts of Spanish-speaking Latin America and in the US. It is known all over the world by many other names:

Sayote is very common in Philippines. It is so common that it is sometimes associated as poor peoples food. It is because when you can't afford to buy vegetables from the market, you can always go in the backyard (or your neighbors' :-D) and pick all you want. The tender tops of the plant is also edible, used in salads and various soups.

sayote island? I don't know but the sayote or chayote in English cannot be grown in hot areas. Therefore, sayotes in an island is not really possible. However, there is a place in the philippines where lots of sayotes are grown - Baguio and La Trinidad, Benguet.. The chayote is actually another trademark of Baguio.

hey guys I'm from Philippines and there is no sayote island there..maybe you are talking about camotes island?..if it is camotes island is part of visayas region..but there is no sayote island there. Wherever you get that name you have the wrong source..

whoa..i haven't heard of sayote island. Sayote is a root crop/vegetable, one thing i know.
but there IS a Camote isalnd, somewhere in the Visayas (either it's part of cebu or leyte)

THERE is NO Sayote island in the Phiilippines.I THINK YOU ARE REFERING TO THE CAMOTES ISLAND located in the VISAYAS. somewhere in CEBU or LEYTE..
