Olfaction is mediated by Gs protein receptors that increase cAMP, resulting in Na+ and Ca++ depolarization, transmitting the potential. Adaptation is due to prolonged exposure to the odorant, which produces increased intracellular accumulation of Ca++, thereby increasing binding of Ca++ to calmodulin, which reduces sensitvity to cAMP
