What if it were you, would you want to be ignored or treated like that. You should be ashamed of yourself. You could very well get into an accident one day and it destroy your mind or leave you paralyzed. Think about that. I think that you are one self centered idiot.

Some folks feel as you. I suspect it is a result of seeing it on TV 24/7 for the first 48 hours, Knowing how bad it was, I understood from the outset that there were going to be limitations to how much good anyone could do from here. The whole concept of helping was distorted from the outset because getting supplies there and distributing was going to be just like it was with Katrina in Louisiana. To complicate matters even more, just as with Katrina, there's nowhere for the survivors to go for help. The problems just escalated beyond what they are able to fathom and are hopelessly lost. And while all that is sad and we all feel badly for them, that is how things are in the world. Bad things happen all over the world and nothing we can do here in the US can change the inevitable.

I guess its not wrong in a sense . I think its because you are fortunate not to live like the people who need things and take it forgranted. If you have friends or family who have disability and you feel nothing for them, then you are a bad person to me. I dont mean ''sympathy'' cause thats not what they need, I mean a need to want to help them make life easier.
Its when things hit home that is when the sympathy kicks in for most people. Right now its not near you so you can just change the channel instead of doing something to help.
I bet it would be horrible to be the person with the disabilty and noone pays attention. There ARE people who do pay attention though.
I wonder if you have children. Alot of ''channel changers'' dont have kids, its when they do when they stop and give a listen.

I guess I too change the channel, when those ads are on. Maybe there is far too many ads like that turn me off. But I do feel for those people. I must admit I do put a lot of money in charities every year.

I'm wondering if that is why you change the channel? Maybe you do have sympathy or empathy and realize that you can not help everyone? I change the channel because I cannot help and I feel terrible about it.
Maybe for you ignoring the problem helps you deal with the inability everyone has with providing sufficient help to everyone else who needs it.
You may have a heart of gold after all.
Hope this hasn't messed you up.

It means you have no empathy. That's okay, I guess. I don't donate to the TV charities either and I have changed the station. They are trying to play on your sympathies. It's not just charities, look at Tel-Evangelists?! "I want to you reach deep into your hearts and pocket books" It's the same thing. They just want your money and if they have to show you starving children to do it they will. I'm not saying that these charities are illegitimate. I just don't like the way they go about it.

I suppose its okay. You change the channel cause you feel sorry for them that you cant help them. I am not saying this in a bad note. Me too I do the same at times. Its because we too, feel helpless to do something for them.
there is still sympathy. Its just that, its not proactive.

I don't think it's wrong, I know I am a huge animal lover but I cannot watch the RSPCA adverts because I cannot understand other peoples cruelty to animals, it's something I struggle to deal with and so for me it's easier to just turn the adverts off, it doesn't mean I accept and forgive the cruelty or that I'm impervious to the effects it has on animals, it just means it hurts me too much to sit and watch. We all react differently to situations. Some people cry when they are bereaved, others find it easier to occupy themselves, neither person is wrong, they are just being human

Is it wrong to change the channel? No, I don't think so, but it seems empathy is more appropriate then sympathy. Don't take things for granted.....you could be in that condition yourself someday.

I agree. I have a brother who is in a wheel chair. Middle class family. Work hard etc..I can not stand the United way!! They always want your money but they don't want to help. We made to much money! They would not help..I don't have much to do with stuff like that.
