You can make use of many of the free folder lock software available on net..just use google to look for them...otherwise one more way is to use Winrar which encrypts your files using the password you provide as the key..so depending on the uniqueness and complexity of your password Winrar makes it impossible to crack it.

I'm still using Windows 98 and fairly happy with it. I don't know how to protect it with a password, but do know how to hide a file, which is probably even better.
For a Windows folder in My Documents, use the mouse and right-click on the icon, type R (or select pRoperties), type D (or select hiDden) and then hit the return button (or select OK). The icon will change from yellow to pale yellow, but will usually not disappear from the screen. However, the next time that you open My Documents, it will have disappeared from the screen. To recover the file, go to the address toolbar and, after 'My Documents', type a backslash, followed by the name of the folder. You can use the same procedure to unhide it.
You can use an analogous procedure for a Document file, but when recovering it, remember to insert the dot.doc extension at the end. And I haven't yet learnt how to unhide a Document file. Well, I've only had my computer for seven years, so there's time to learn yet !
