Thunderstorms need three things to happen - heat, unstable air, and moist air. The warmer the air, the more water vapor it can hold, and the instability of the air allows the warm, moist air to rise high into the atmosphere and form the big thunderclouds. So whatever season is the warmest (and most humid) where you are would be the season for thunderstorms.
The same is true for the formation of hurricanes - you need ocean temperatures above 80 degrees F. and lots of moisture for them to form - and they also usually spawn thunderstorms.
