The liger, is a hybrid cross between a male lion, and a female Tiger and is denoted scientifically as panthera tigris x panthera leo. A liger resembles a giant lion with diffused stripes. They are the largest cats in the world, although the Siberian Tiger is the largest pure breed.Ligers grow much larger than lions and even larger than the largest tigers, which can weigh over 900 kg
(2000 lb) and well over 4 ft tall at the shoulder. On average, ligers stand at about 10-12 ft when standing on their hind legs Like tigers, but unlike lions, ligers enjoy swimming. While male ligers are sterile, female ligers are fertile, and they can reproduce. If a liger were to reproduce with a tiger, it would be called a ti-liger, and if it were to reproduce with a lion, it would be called a li-liger.
A Tigon is the hybrid of a male tiger and a lioness.Tigons can exhibit characteristics of both parents: they can have both spots from the mother (lions carry genes for spots — lion cubs are spotted) and stripes from the father. Any mane that a male tigon may have will appear shorter and less noticeable than a lion's mane and is closer in type to the ruff of a male tiger. They often weigh around 150 kilograms (350 lb). Male tigons are sterile while the females are generally fertile. In India, a female tigon named Rudhrani, born in 1971, was mated to an Asiatic lion called Debabrata and produced 7 li-tigons in her lifetime. Some of these reached impressive sizes - a li-tigon named Cubanacan (died 1991) weighed at least 800lb/363 kg, stood 52 inches/1.32 metres at the shoulder and 11.5ft/3.5 metres total length.

hope this helps

Yes, didn't you watch Napoleon Dynamite? It's called a liger, there is also a tigon, believe it or not. The difference is which parent is the lion and which parent is the tiger.

Male Lion + Female Tiger = Liger
Male Tiger + Female Lion = Tigon

Further combos of ligers and tigons get even more complicated being called things like li-tigons and ti-ligers, etc. Also another tidbit I learned: Male tigons are sterile while the females are generally fertile. Likewise, male ligers are sterile but female ligers are fertile, and they can reproduce

Yes. When you mate a male lion and a female tiger, you get a liger. The growth inhibitors are found in female lions and male tigers so ligers grow larger than tigers or lions. A tigon on the other hand is the result of the mating of a male tiger and a female lion. Since growth inhibitors are found in both parents, a tigon is smaller than either the tiger or the lion.
