How are they able to run around with them on? Or is that special effects that are added in later?

While it was true in older movies when actors had to wear speciality lenses that were hard lenses it is true that they were painful to wear and see through, but not so much so today. The ones that Kiefer Sutherland wore as a vampire in "The Lost Boys" were of that type and read accounts that they were hard to put in because they covered his entire eye, and they were hard contact lenses made of glass..not the pliable plastic ones you see today.

With the quality of the specialty lenes today, there is no problem with vision; many are sold over the counter with a basic prescription (one example would be at wildcontact.com site below).

Exception would be that even soft contact lenses that cover more of the eye than the iris or especially if the wearer is not used to wearing any type of lenses, can irriate the eye and make it painful and hard to see after even a few hours.
