To work this out, remember BODMAS

Brackets
Or
Division
Multiplication
Addition
Subtraction

It is the order in which the sum is best worked out

Therefore

(5 x 4 - 15) = 5
2 x 7 = 14

Your sum will now look as such

42 + 14 - 5 =

To continue

42 + 14 = 56

and finally

56 - 5 = 51

Hope this helps.

Good luck.

use pemdas to start solving the problem

42+2 x 7 - 5(5 x 4=20-15=5)
42+14(2 x 7)-5
42 +14= 56-5= 51

well.. you have to remember the fact that in order of Operations remember..
Please
Excuse
MaD
SAlly
Capitals stand for an operation like
P= Parenthesis
E=Exponents
M=Multipication
D= Division
S=subtraction
A=Addition

(note depending on which operation comes first division and mulitplication don't out rank each other smae whith adding and subbtracting.)
so knowing that you always do the stuff in parenthisis first.
since there are two operations in the parenthisis you do the muliplication. then you write the problem again.
so 42 + 2*7 - (20 -15) then you continue with the parenthisis
42+2*7-5, then you do the multiplication,
42+14-5, then you do the addition,
42+14=56-5, then finnaly you do the minusing
56-5=51!!!! 51 is your answer!!!

In Maths, a dot represents multiplication. In this case, it would mean:

42 + 2x7 - (5x4 - 15)

We have to solve for the multiplication and bracketed terms first, so it would be:

42 + 14 - (20 - 15)
= 42 + 14 - 5
= 51
