Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it! You don't make the same mistakes that you did when you were a kid right? That's because you learned from them.

It's important because if we didn't study history we wouldn't have a history because if no one studied it no one would write it and without a written history, history doesn't exist because history exists only in our minds, its the only place it can exist, so we transfer whats in our minds to books so other people can study and our history can live on. The time before we had written history we call pre-history, indicating that there was no history, because it wasn't documented and as such we have no way of knowing what people were doing back then so because we can't study it and put it in our minds, it therefore cannot really exist. End point: study history, its cool and because the more people know about history the better able we are to use that knowledge to understand ourselves and understand what it means to be human and then be better able to move society forward in the right direction. Conclusion: study the past in order to move forward, otherwise you might end up just going sideways or even worse backwards.

It is important to study history so you can gain a better understanding of the world. Because the past influences the present, and the future. So if you do not know your past then how will you know what to expect in the future. For instance I sometimes wonder if our country was not so racist in the past then maybe it would not be so racist today, and the next generation after us would not have to deal with racism either. So you see it is a good thing that history honors Robert Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr, and others because these people are some of our ancestors who came before us the present generation of people, and made a difference. Without these people our quality of life today would be a lot different. So history allows us to pay these, and others our gratitude for what they did so that the world could be a better place for them, us, and the future generations long after we are gone.

For me, the study of history is the study of humanity. To know ones own personnel history is important so why wouldn't the study of human history be important? I could say we are doomed to repeat our mistakes if we do not learn from them. For myself history is the all emcompassing subjet, from Art, Sceince, Mathematic's to the Earth, everything that we are now, that we know now, will be what was tommorrow.

The ability to read and write that which was passed down from generations, each generation giving a little and adding to the next. When we study history we study the generations, the knowledge, lives, crimes, errors, mistakes, tragedies, loves, passion, etc. we learn who we are and how we arrived at where we are. To know that others have walked the path your are now walking should be reassuring. Can history give us answers? I do not think so but it can let us know what was tried and what was the outcome.

In a Personal Level if you do not know your PAST, your experiences, why you are there, and who you are, that show you how to behave and act, you will make the same mistakes over and over again. Making your life miserable.

In a Social or International Level if you do not know the history of your country, or the world, and what decisions had been correct and which had been mistakes in the past, you are liable to repeat the same mistakes, have incorrect opinions, and take wrong turns. These cost lives, and affects millions of persons.

History is an important factor for a well cultured person, that puts that person in a higher intellectual level, due to his effective and wise opinions that benefit all.

History is one of the most interesting subjects out there to study, because that is where we came from, those are the people and events that have shaped the landscape that we tread upon today. It's just too bad that you cant pick up a classified section to find a job for a historian, or else there would be less people walking around with their heads lodged between their buns.

I don't know about learning from the past but knowing the past definitely helps us to UNDERSTAND the present! I've learned a lot about (for example) Native American issues of today by studying the past and their interactions with Europeans from past to present. Very enlightening. Make the news come alive, you could say! Then, instead of ignorantly saying "what a bunch of lazy ingrates", you can say with some understanding "well, that's the group that helped the British in the American Revolution and then moved to Brantford Ontario and now they are contesting land claims related to..." blah blah blah. Helps you to get a fuller picture and avoid generalizing and so on.

I t is good to understand history because it always seems to repeat itself. besides you understand how people of the Americas, and through out the world overcame diffuculties which in turn helps us to have role models to aspire to . Martin luther King, F.D.R., Lewis and Clark, Gandi, Mother Treasa, and Churchell to list just a few has helped me personally to see that theire fortutude carried them trhough in some very tight positions. There unwavering faith in there own god knowing it is not them that is at the controls but an unseen power that runs the show.

Because those who forget the mistakes of the past are condemned to repeat them in the future. And because it is important to know about your roots and that you did not appear from nowhere. And because all intellectual inquiry is worth doing for its own sake.

In order to understand where we're going, we need to have knowledge of where we came from, who we are and mistakes we made. History continues to repeat itself and we can change our futures if we remember the past...
