I work in Advertising for the local newspaper as a receptionist and am board and frustrated..... I am interested in starting a community newsletter as the paper is more interested in making money than giving the public useful information on whats on, where etc could anyone advise me on this I would have the support of the local community centre but funding is not currently available

Start with visiting local businesses and explaining what you are about to do. By informing them that their shops, restaurants, cafes etc. would get a mention in your community newsletter, you are almost guaranteed to get their financial support, as they hopefully wouldn't want to be left out.

You could also have a 'star' local business feature every, say, month, insuring that special support from the star business in question.

You could also organise fund-raising events in your local community centre, with some of the proceedings going to a local charity, and the rest towards printing the newsletter.

So, take a little time in preparing your pitch, then go for it.

It's a great idea, btw, because the general public is either left in the dark, or misinformed, especially at the local level.

Good luck!

First of all make sure you didn't sign a non-compete clause to your employment contract or you could end up without a job and/or facing a lawsuit because there is a fine line of legality there depending on what you write about and what customers and advertisers you target. Cover yourself on that one. If you want backing from the local community center, approach the local community center. Get yourself a couple of sample newsletters to present to them, try to arrange for advertisers to pay for the publication costs, and you won't really need a whole lot of your own startup money.

Unfortunately founding is going to be your biggest issue - you might want to start looking into lining up companies and sponsors that will support you in this endeavour. You will also need to find out where you will be able to print this newpaper and how much it will cost unless you purchase the printing press - either way this will incure yet another long-term expense.

The idea is good, you just need to do the research and sell the idea to those who would most benefit. Like it or not, todays society is all about $$$.
