It could be either (b) or (d), depending on when the cancellation was announced. If the cancellation were announced a long time in advance of the exam date, you'd probably use (d). If the cancellation were announced shortly before the exam date (by which time the students would be busy revising), then (b) would certainly be the correct choice.

Phrases (c) and (e) definitely don't fit. Phrase (a) makes sense, but is clumsy and very inelegant.

meaning: you DID do the revision, but it was not necessary
