Crowded House (though founder Neil Finn is a Kiwi)
Midnight Oil
Jimmy Barnes
Mental As Anything
Hoodoo Gurus
AC/DC

And many many more, as they say. I'm British and I can think of dozens more. What about:

The Moving Pictures
Cold Chisel
Then theres Split Enz from New Zealand and Stellar* and Bic Runga.
A quick note to say that Smokey (or Smokie) come from Bradford in Yorkshire. UK

I too was a huge fan of New Wave from that same time period. It's not a question anymore as to whether it will come back in style or not, it already has. The bad news is that the bands that are allegedly bringing it back don't do much for me. If New Wave Part 2 is based on the likes of The Killers, The Bravery, or Editors then wake me up when it's over. Also, there is no age requirement on music, like what you want to.

If you're prepared to completely ignore the popular genre and perfomers from the last 10-20 years, then yo may be pleasantly surprised; the music of indigenous peoples is often the best to listen to, and can acually inspire people to write new stuff.
I'm not saying the likes of Kylie et al are rubbish, but they aren't the only source of music!

oh my gosh yes. don't be silly
if you check out the countdown tv series you'll see that so many bands launched their careers through that show. and most of those bands have been awesomely successful! (i'm sorry to say it but that includes INXS)
tell me what genre of music you're interested in and i'll list the bands i recommend for you. there's so much talent just contained in australia. it's a shame more people don't know them

The Vines are good and they're from Australia. Highly Evolved is one of the best albums in years.
