This is an activity I use with my 6th and 7th grade English class.
At the beginning of the year I hand every kid a paper clock face. At each hour I tell the kids to go find another person to put at each hour. They then put this clock face in their binder. During the year when I finish early or need to kill some time I will tell them to pull out their clock and visit one of their clock appointments. I tell them to discuss some skills or idea we have been discussing in class recently. They will share what they learned or what they don't understand. Studies show if students can reverbalize to a peer what ideas or skills they have learned it significantly improves learning. I know that didn't give you any "TOPICS" but I'm sure you can use it and select some of the concepts and or skills you have taught in your class.

Why don't you talk about what is going on in the world right now? Current events are always important to discuss. We all need to be up on these issues. You don't have to talk about the war or anything too controversial. Just human interest stories really get them to talking. Ask them what they think. Why did this event happen? What could be done to help this person or etc.? Or what would they have done if they were in that situation?

I think polls are fun. Maybe use polls as a way to branch off into different areas. Just have fun with it! And be genuine. People can sense when you don't really care about their opinions. (I am not saying you would do this, it's just a general statement.)

You don't need too many topics, just use them on a deeper level. You might be blowing through some good ones at breakneck speed. Really explore the questions. Have you tried using The Book of Questions?

I'm not sure I totally know what you mean, but a class I was in a couple months ago......we had an interesting discussion on child abuse. Like, what constitutes it and what is just discipline. And is it okay to spank children. It got people going!

It's extremely disturbing that someone who writes like you might actually be teaching an English class. I pity your students from the depths of my heart.

However, I can suggest this book in hopes that it will be a better teacher than you are. It is an EXCELLENT book to get your students engaged in speaking activities that are meaningful and interesting. As you'll see, there is an intermediate edition and an advanced edition. All activities inside the book are photocopiable.
