No I don't think religious people are unintelligent, just hopeful and imaginative. I have a religion I practice, and even though I know it is very likely a load of crap, I none the less enjoy the heck out of it, and it definitely makes life more fun and interesting. You aught to try it, especially with the understanding that there is no proof that it is real, but that you're just agreeing to pretend for the fun of it. Who knows, maybe the Universe works like a great big wishing machine and whatever you decide to believe about God and the afterlife, it will grant to you exactly as you imagine it to be. Kind of makes me want to imagine the best thing possible, which I do of course.

It would seem that way at first glance from the nutty beliefs they hold, but the fact is many believers are also highly intelligent. Being smart doesn't prevent you from being wrong or delusional!

There is an indirect correlation, however, in that more education strongly inclines a person to less belief, and only fairly intelligent people have access to higher education (or maybe it's fairly white or fairly wealthy...).

Michael Shermer of the Skeptics Society has written several books, two of which are Why People Believe Weird Things and its sequel, Why Smart People Believe Weird Things. Take your pick.
