It depends on what kind of party you are having. If it is something like a 21st or a big wedding anniversary then a huge party is better. My 21st was relatively small and I loved it but it didn't really go off. On the other hand, I've had gatherings with just a few girlfriends and that is better if you just want to sit and natter with them, you want something more intimate, no loud music, huge crowds, etc.

i prefer small gatherings because the people coming to your gathering will be closer friends and family. You can also talk to everyone and be with everyone instead of just being with a few people at a party.

For my birthday I like a huge party, but for intimate and intellectual conversations I like small gatherings.

Both have their advantages. I kinda like the small gathering that occurs after the big party. You know, the few people left who are just drunk enough to be communicative and a bit philosophical, and just sober enough to be coherent.

A luncheon with 2 or 3 friends is ideal for me.
Huge parties can be fun, but usually too loud to hold a conversation.
I also dance like an elephant on ice-skates. No offense to ice-skating elephants.
