That's a pretty tough question! "Your identity" is what makes you you as a simple answer.

But I think you're asking for more than that...

There are two types of identities and they can exist in different environments as well.

The first is your SELF identity. This is what you are to yourself. We make choices and we have preferences or predispositions towards things and that partially makes up our self identity. We can choose what we make of ourselves and how we want to identify ourselves. We choose what clothes to wear, what we want to eat, where we like to hangout, and what types of activities we like to do. However, there are also physical characteristics that we do not get to choose, such as race, eye color, body structure just to name a few. When we have a "weak" self identity we seek change. First we tend to want to change our physical characteristics by doing things like dying our hair, loosing weight, working out, getting colored contacts, etc. Once we feel more comfortable about our physical identity we begin to focus on our internal identity and seek to change things such as knowledge base, our social relationships, our spirituality, our attitudes, and the like. When we develop a "strong" self identity we obtain peace with ourselves.

The second type of identity is what I would call your SOCIAL identity. This is less of what you would see of yourself and more of how others perceive you. Other perceptions of our identity is based on physical observations of both our physical characteristics as well as our physical behavior. Western culture is dominated by an obsession of how we are perceived. We continually seek the approval of others either conciously or subconciously in order to control how others identify us.

When I say there are different environments where these two types of identity exist, one example is the difference between how we are identified within our families and another is how we are identified at our school or workplace, and yet another is how we are identified in this very cyber-world of the internet. All three environments can have similar and yet very different represetations of SELF and SOCIAL identity.

A great example showing the complexity of our identities would be found in the movie Anger Management with Adam Sandler and Jack Nicholson. When Adam's character is asked "who are you" he tries to answer by telling what he does as opposed to who he is. Once we can "identify" ourselves, we can have the confidence to exist without being in bondage to seeking to please others. We can take a stand for ourselves.
