if a friend brings over a computer, what do we need to hook them up inexpensively as possible. (in order to play games computer vs. computer w\o using internet)

Ethernet, if you have network cards installed as it's faster than USB. If your PC's are close by, then a Ethernet null modem cable will do the trick just fine.
Also cheapest. 50' cat 5 crossover cable from CompUSA is $13
($7 for 10[') whereas USB data networking cable runs $18 at Walmart (No length mentioned. Presume Standard 6' cable.)

The easiest way is to set up a wifi network. If you're fortunate enough to have a mac, you could also use bluetooth, Firewire, or an ethernet cable.

USB cable is the easiest and cheapest way. Your computer probably came with this cable already. Have fun!

USB hub or a router. Most games require networking for head to head gaming. If you use Windoze XP, use the network set-up wizard.
