If it's only occuring in the morning , most likely your problem is network congestion. In other words, you and everyone else is trying to get online at the same time.

Per BT's own website and I quote:

Once set, your maximum broadband speed should remain largely stable, only varying if one of the above factors changes significantly. The main factors governing the day-to-day download speed you will experience over your line are:
the time of day ie. how busy BT’s network and the Internet are (6-9pm being the busiest time, when speed can reduce significantly)
the speed of individual websites you are visiting (some have a maximum access speed)
whether you’re sharing your connection with others in your home
whether any spyware or any other hardware is slowing down your computer

Remember up to 8 MB means anything from 1 b/s all the way up to 8 Mb/s is perfectly acceptable .

which email provider are you using, broadband is only as fast as the site you connect to can upload. If a lot of people are doing the same thing at the same time t will slow the service. Also my antivirus checks my email for viruses, When I first boot the PC it also checks the startup programs this slows its checking of the emails and it sometime takes a similar time while it is doing this.

If things are slow in general it may be worth doing a speedtest o see if anythng is wrong, if you sign up to http://ww.thinkbroadband.com you can run speedtests and save the results to see how things are over time.

I am no expert, but mine is slow too - I think it is something to do with the security we have these days - check you have disabled Windows firewall if you use BT /Norton Firewall. The anti spyware settings on your PC may also be enabled to scan at start up - if they are and you have the BT / Norton security spyware check enabled this will also slow things down. I have found that the 'BT Desktop help' runs a diagnostic every time I start up - will nevertheless be interested to hear what the experts have to say in anwer to your question as I could do with speeding up in the mornings too!!
